CGC vs PSA Graded Pokémon Cards: How to Tell They're Authentic

If you're shopping for graded Pokémon cards, you've probably noticed two names everywhere: CGC and PSA. Both are third-party grading companies that inspect a card's condition, seal it in a tamper-evident holder, and assign it a numeric grade. But how do you know the card in that holder is really what the label says, and not a clever fake?

What CGC and PSA Grading Actually Means

When a card is graded by CGC (Certified Guaranty Company) or PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator), it's been examined by trained graders for centering, corners, edges, and surface quality. The card is then sealed in a hard plastic holder (often called a "slab") with a label showing the grade, the card's details, and a unique certification number.

How to Verify a Graded Card Is Authentic

  • Check the certification number. Every CGC and PSA slab has a unique cert number printed on the label. You can enter this number on the grading company's official website (CGC or PSA) to confirm the grade, card details, and that the certification actually exists.
  • Inspect the holder itself. Genuine CGC and PSA holders use specific plastic weights, fonts, and tamper-evident seams. Look for blurry printing, uneven seams, or a label that doesn't quite match the card inside — these are red flags.
  • Match the label to the card. The set name, card number, and year on the label should exactly match the card visible inside the holder.
  • Buy from sellers who show clear photos. A trustworthy seller will photograph the front and back of the slab, including the label and cert number, so you can verify before you buy.

Why This Matters When You're Buying

A graded card carries a premium price because the grade guarantees condition and authenticity. Buying from a seller who lists the certification number and shows real photos of the actual slab — not stock images — gives you confidence that what arrives matches what you ordered.

Every graded card we list, including our CGC-graded and PSA-graded pieces, comes with clear photos of the actual card and holder so you can verify the certification yourself before it ships.
